FOR THE FLEECE AND YARN SHOWS!
The very first Alpaca Fleece and Fibre Show was held on the 18th September 2010 at the Frome Livestock Market It was created in a new and innovative style which proved very popular with both fleece entrants and spectators alike.
The Show brought together alpaca fibre sales with alpaca fleece judging. A sales hall full of small breeders and independent traders offering their alpaca products for sale. Running alongside the sales hall were the alpaca fleece classes, created not just as a fleece show, but a fleece workshop at the same time.
The judge Dominic Lane was presented with 186 alpaca fleeces, which were all judged in the presence of the gathered audience. Each fleece was presented in a box with a sealed envelope containing the animals and owners identity.
This concept created much speculation and anticipation. Breeders were not sure if they had won or not, and the results were announced from 2nd to 5th place to great applause each time. After each class, the Judge explained the reasons for his decision and the audience were presented with a small amount of fleece from the winner. The judge explained why certain fleece traits were award winning and the audience could hear, see and feel the reason why. The 1st placed fleeces were entered into the colour championships, and the winners of these were put forward for the Supreme Championships again without their identities being revealed.
At the end of the fleece judging, it was time for the award of the Supreme Champions. The room was full to bursting with people waiting for the announcements and the tension and anticipation were evident by the silence. Suri Supreme Champion was awarded to Larden Augustus owned by Mr. & Mrs. J. C. Jones. Huacaya Supreme Champion was Limestone Mitzi owned by Mr. Paul Wills. Congratulations to all the award winners.
The stall holders in the alpaca sale hall reported brisk business, mostly from visitors from the very large Mole Valley Farmers store next door. All the stall holders have expressed a desire to return.
In 2011 a yarn show was introduced for the first time. Breeders were able to enter their yarn free of charge, and to have it judged by Jean Field who is a very well known and acknowledged expert. This was also a huge success with over 40 entries, and will be repeated again each year.
The GWR Alpaca Fleece and Yarn Show is now in it's third year, and will be held again on Saturday 15th September 2012 at the same venue
